An Austrian woman has died after being attacked by a shark near the Egyptian resort of Hurghada. The 68-year-old woman was swimming when she was attacked. She went into shock and died in hospital.
The woman is said to have lost an arm and a leg in the attack. She is said to have married an Egyptian and lived in Hurghada on the Red Sea.
Tourists were able to watch the tragic event from the beach and from a jetty. A video of the incident shows the woman trying to get to safety in red-colored water. Meanwhile, men on the jetty try to pull her out of the water with a rope.
The Red Sea is a popular destination for snorkelers and divers, among others. Deadly shark attacks are rare. In 2018, a tourist from the Czech Republic died, as did a German in 2015 and a retired German in 2010.
