Zverev is better than ever, Djokovic has some catching up to do
For Zverev it is the next attempt to win a Grand Slam tournament. He already played against Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2021 – and lost in four sets after a great fight.
Zverev is currently playing as well as he did before his injury at the French Open 2022, he is in second place in the world rankings and won more games on the professional tour in 2024 than ever before. In Melbourne he was only on the pitch for around twelve hours in total, and he rarely saved so much energy until the semi-finals. Only against Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals did he have to play longer than three hours.
Djokovic, on the other hand, played for around 15 hours, had to undergo treatment several times – as is often the case in Grand Slam tournaments – and managed to find dominance after the breaks. Even against Carlos Alcaraz, things only got better for him after taking two painkillers. The Serb had a mixed season for him in 2024 and only won a single tournament. But that had a special meaning, because the victory at the Olympics and the gold medal was the last success that was still missing from his collection of titles. This year, Djokovic is aiming for the 25th Grand Slam, which would make him the most successful tennis player among both men and women.
