The charm of the Bathurst 1000
Enthusiasts who never miss a race around the world, but also those who enjoy virtual races, on the simulator or on the PlayStation, know this well: the Mount Panorama track is one of the most difficult, technical and special in the world. For this reason, partly for reasons linked to the long tradition of the event, partly because the circuit is still dangerous and fascinating today, the Bathurst 1000 is by far the most important motoring event in Australia. A thousand km long race inevitably full of surprises. Which do not always come directly from the dangers of the route itself, but also from… external elements.
There is a snake on the trail in Mount Panorama
This is the case of free practice 2 of this year’s edition of the race, which takes place over the weekend and is currently part of the calendar of Australian Supercars championship. The test session was in fact postponed for a few minutes due to the presence on the track – to be precise in turn 18, the downhill one that leads onto the very long straight of the third sector – of a venomous snake. The start of the FP2 session had already been delayed due to the presence of oil on the asphalt, but the sighting of the reptile pushed the organizers to wait longer. The session was therefore postponed by a total of 30 minutes compared to the scheduled start.
The animal, of the species of eastern brown snake, is considered one of the most poisonousthe to the world. Even more admirable for this reason is the courage (or perhaps recklessness) of the marshal who, in the final phase of the video posted on social media by the Australian TV station Fox Sportsis seen intervening to clear the track of the unwelcome guest. The commissioner, without particular protections and equipped with a simple net, trapped the snake in a few seconds allowing the cars to set off for their test session. The 2024 Bathurst 1000km is scheduled for this weekend, October 10-13.
