Throughout the week we were reading about the dimes and diretes of the investigation of Latinus and the Mexican association against Corruption, where the luxurious house of the son of Andrés Manuel López Obrador is shown in a residential area of Houston. If you haven’t seen it, you can google it and draw your conclusions with the information you have on the case so far.
As the investigations unravel and the complaint that the PAN filed three days ago against José Ramón López Beltrán, son of AMLO, for alleged acts of corruption and influence peddling proceeds; What is evident is that given the evidence that the president’s son lived in that house that belongs to a senior executive of the Baker Hughes company, an oil contractor for Pemex, there is a clear conflict of interest that must be clarified.
As always, the president’s defensive attitude towards a statement like this could not be missing, affirming that those who have presented these accusations belong to the “mafia of power” who seek to sabotage their national project. AMLO again seeks to delegitimize a media outlet, a well-founded investigation and opponents of his government, instead of accepting the process of verifying information, speaking clearly with the media and coming out “slander unscathed,” as he has mentioned. on various occasions, try to strengthen its foundations so that the distortion that the presidential family has about austerity does not grow.
This attitude demonstrates, once again, that constant criticism of any journalist who questions or contradicts it is born and reproduced from the Executive Power, this coupled with the historic number of journalists murdered so far this year, with absolute impunity. Sad start to 2022 for Mexico and its press, it seems that the ways by which the president came to power now seeks to eliminate them: democracy and freedom of expression. He has become what he criticized so much and continues to act as the permanent candidate who casts blame equally for acting.
Everyone is free to choose their way of living, therefore, no one judges the quality of life that the president’s son decides to have inside and outside the country, as long as his access to it is not based on influences and negotiations that emanate of presidential power; what is incongruous is the effort that AMLO puts into discrediting the upper classes and classifying them as aspiring, selfish and even enemies of the nation. To make such arguments, one would have to start by leading by example, right?
For the outcome of this and the next contradictions that arise, there must be co-responsibility in transparency, accountability and freedom of expression on issues of national interest. As citizens, it is up to us to be informed, investigate and not allow the information to be clouded and distorted with the hate speech and polarization that is repeated day by day from the National Palace; and it is up to the president to agree with a good attitude to clarify, respond and not offend the questions that are unleashed during the investigation. We will be pending.
