New Zealand’s Auckland City team began training immediately upon arriving in Abu Dhabi this morning, in preparation for the match against Al Ain next Sunday in the first round of the 2024 Intercontinental Club Championship, with the winner of this match advancing to meet Al Ahly of Egypt in Cairo in the quarter-finals, which will be held next October.
Auckland City coach Albert Riera, who was born, raised and played for obscure clubs in Barcelona, pointed out that the confrontation requires his team to work hard against a competitor who won the AFC Champions League title last season for good reason. He said: “I and the players watched recordings of Al Ain’s matches, and we studied the team’s style of play. In the coming days, we will increase the training dose and watch more videos to analyze the competitor.”
“We used the time by doing muscle relaxation exercises as soon as we got here. It is a bit hot, but we are used to it from playing in Tahiti in similar conditions, so we will get used to it. We found a great hotel to stay in and the training ground is just a few steps away, so things are going very well here in the Emirates.”
