(Reuters) – The Association of Professional Tennis Players (ATP) has launched an internal investigation into allegations of domestic abuse by German tennis player Alexander Zverev made by his ex-girlfriend Olga Sharypova, the organization said in a statement on Monday.
In an August 25 interview with digital magazine Slate, former tennis player Sharypova said Zverev abused her emotionally and physically during their relationship.
The world number four and Olympic medalist has repeatedly denied the allegations, and has not been the target of any charges.
“I have always fully supported the creation of an ATP policy against domestic abuse,” Zverev said in a statement on Monday.
“Furthermore, I applaud the ATP’s investigation into the matter and have been asking the ATP to initiate an independent investigation for months.”
Zverev, 24, denied “definitely and unequivocally” that he had abused Sharypova, and on Aug. 27 said his lawyers had filed a lawsuit against the plaintiff.
Slate has issued a statement saying it maintains its “fair and thorough reporting.”
The ATP said an internal investigation into Zverev’s allegations at the 2019 Shanghai Masters 1000 is “currently ongoing.”
“The allegations made against Alexander Zverev are serious and we have a responsibility to address them,” ATP Chief Executive Massimo Calvelli said in a statement.
