The Polish champion defeated by the number 3 in the world. Tonight, even winning against Medvedev, the blue would not qualify for the semifinals
Sascha Zverev beats Hubert Hurkacz in two slim sets (6-2 6-4), passes to the semifinals of the ‘Masters’ and extinguishes Jannik Sinner’s dream.
Tonight, at 9pm, Jannik will challenge world number 2 Daniil Medvedev for the glory and pleasure of the Pala Alpi Tour spectators, but he no longer has a chance to finish in the top four even by completing the feat, since he has played a match less and in the event of a tie in victories with the German it would discount the – questionable – criterion of the greater number of matches played which acts as a distinction (in the case of Jan’s victory the balance would be 2-0 for the Italian and 2-1 for German). A rule that probably needs to be rethought.
Zverev was forced to win if he wanted to avoid a blue trip, and he did so with authority, immediately breaking Hurkacz’s resistance at the beginning of the game (16 points won over the first 18). The first set ended in just 26 minutes, in the second Sascha controlled the return of the Pole. It is the third time that Zverev, n.3 Atp, qualifies among the ‘last four’ of the Finals, a tournament he won in 2018. On Saturday he will face world number 1 Novak Djokovic in the noblest semifinal of the Finals. For his part Jannik Sinner, thanks to the defeat last night of Cameron Norrie, substitute for Stefanos Tsitsipas, against the Norwegian Ruud, has secured the place number 10 in the ATP rankings at the end of the year. He just has to play a great match against Medvedev tonight, for once without having to worry about the points at stake.
