Diego Costa, finally, was made official as Atlético-MG’s new reinforcement. Clube and the experienced player reached an agreement and the announcement of the signing took place this Saturday night, after the victory of the Minas Gerais team, leader of Brasileirão, by 2-0 over Palmeiras in Mineirão.
“From the world to Belo Horizonte: Diego Costa is now from Clube Atlético Mineiro!”, wrote the club on its social networks, where it also published a video with the striker’s moves and goals.
Hours before the announcement, a video in which the attacker sends a message to the athletic fans went viral on the internet. “Speak, the most engaged fans in Brazil. Thank you very much for the support. This is Galo”, said the player on the recording.
The agreement is valid until the end of 2022. Born in the Sergipe city of Lagarto, Diego Costa is still in Spain and is expected in Belo Horizonte to perform tests and sign the new contract at the beginning of the week.
The striker built his victorious career in Europe, with remarkable spells in Spanish Atlético de Madrid and English Chelsea. Atlético-MG will be Sergipe’s first club as a professional athlete in Brazil.
Diego Costa left Brazil very early. After a spell in Portuguese football, he moved to Atlético de Madrid where he established himself as one of the great strikers in world football. He also played for Celta de Vigo, Albacete, Valladolid and Rayo Vallecano.
Diego played for Barcelona-SP, between 2004 and 2005. After that, he was acquired by Sporting, which lent him to Penafiel. He gained acclaim at Atlético de Madrid and played for other Spanish clubs. He was also part of the Chelsea team that won the Premier League in the 2014/2015 and 2016/2017 seasons.
In July 2013, he was called up by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari for three friendlies of the Brazilian team in London, England. Months later, he chose to play for Spain and made his debut in that country, which he even defended in the World Cup that year.
With no opportunities at Atlético de Madrid last season, he decided to break his contract in December 2020. Often speculated at Palmeiras, of whom he declares himself a fan, he ended up reaching an agreement with the Atletican team after several months without playing.
