Eveliina Määttänen performed a brave run in the 800m heats at the World Championships in Athletics.

Määttänen, who started from the outer track, quickly hit Ethiopia Diribe Weltejin I’ll take the second place.

“It wasn’t quite in line with the tactics, but I tried to run as much as possible, to get acid,” 26-year-old Määttänen said and took support from the railing of the interview area.

Määttänen ran the first round harder than ever: 58.10. The fierce initial pace backfired on the final straight. Määttänen could no longer find a letterhead.

“The final straight was long this time. It must not have been such a tough first round. I tried to run comfortably and economically. When I had to start the final script, it didn’t really come off,” said Määttänen.

Määttanen can be satisfied with his WC run. The former 400 meter paddler moved to 800 meters only last fall.

This year, he has already improved his record by five seconds. In the preliminaries, he ran a time of 2:02.68. It brought the sixth place in the race and the 32nd place overall.

The heat winner Welteji ran 1:58.83. In the heat of Määttänen, three heats were run with the fastest times.

“Can’t be terribly disappointed, the third best time of my career. I went to enjoy the competition,” said Määttänen, who works as a pharmacist at the central pharmacy in Kerava.

The training program is planned according to work shifts.
