Athletics World Championships | Dramatic climax again in the men’s long final: China’s Wang took the World Championship gold with his last jump

The Swiss decathlete won the World Championship bronze.

Eugene, Oregon

Men’s the long jump final again had a dramatic end in the same way as a year ago at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou was already going to an easy victory when China Jianan Wang jumped 836 cents in his last and surpassed the Greek by four cents.

Wang’s victory was not a surprise. His record is 847 centimeters. He previously had World Championship bronze from the home games in Beijing in 2015. He was fifth in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and sixth in the previous World Championships in 2019 in Doha.

Tenoglou was unable to match Wang’s score with his own final jump. Thus, Tenoglou was once again without the world championship. In addition to the Olympic gold, he also has the European championship.

Cuba at the Olympics Juan Miguel Echevarria lost the lead to Tentoglou in the last lap as well. Both jumped 841 cm, but Tentoglou’s second-best jump was better than Echevarria’s.

Eccevarria did not compete in Eugene.

Swiss Simon Ehammer jumped WC bronze (816). Olympic bronze medalist from Cuba Maykel Massó dropped to fourth (815) after Wang’s jump.

Ehammer, 22, a track and field multi-talent who plans to compete in the decathlon at the European Championships in August.

In May, he took the Swiss record of 8,377 points, with which he is ninth in the world decathlon statistics.

Swedish Thobias Montler jumped only 781 centimeters and was eleventh.

2019 World Champion Jamaican Tajay Gayle dropped out of the continuation already in qualifying.
