Kenyan middle distance runner Kipyegon Bett has died at the age of 26, says, among other things BBC-leaf.
Betti’s sister Purity Kirui told the BBC that Betti had been suffering from stomach pains for more than a month. He had been diagnosed with liver problems at the doctor.
“Last week we took him to the hospital when he started vomiting blood. He was admitted to the hospital. I went to see him [sunnuntaina] in the morning and he said he was in pain,” Kirui said.
“He asked our father, who is a pastor, to pray for him because he felt he would not survive. After 12 o’clock he died. We tried everything to save him, but he left us. It’s very painful,” Kirui continued, according to the BBC.
The actual cause of death has not been disclosed.
Beth won 2016 under-20 World Championship gold in 800 meters and 2017 adult World Championship bronze. His career practically ended when he tested positive for the doping substance epo in 2018. At that time, Bett received a four-year ban from competition.
