Aaron Kangas will throw later on Friday in the second qualifying group.

Tuomas Seppänen started the Finns’ competitive career at the World Championships in Athletics on Friday.
Seppänen’s best throw in the first qualifying group was 72 meters and 81 centimeters. The result was not enough for the final. Seppänen was eleventh in his group.
“It was a great place to throw in the middle of the field. Rinki was good and the man was on point, but he didn’t quite hit. Based on the training, I expected the best of the season. It’s a little sad, but this was a day of celebration when you got the best cookies,” Seppänen said.
This season, Seppänen has thrown 74.97.
Seppänen returned to the prestigious competition in Eugene after a six-year break. The last time he competed in the World Championships was in 2015 in Beijing, where he was tenth (73.18). In 2016, he qualified from the European Championships.
Seppänen made it to the World Championships based on the ranking system. In 2016, he accordingly stayed on the beach for the Olympic Games in Rio, when the Iranian thrower passed him in the rankings in the last moments.
The new ranking system no longer emphasizes one single race or result, but instead the average of five races is calculated.
Seppänen liked the new ranking system better than the old one.
“There’s still room for improvement in the system, but it’s better that one throw doesn’t hurt everywhere,” Seppänen said.
Blacksmith raced in Eugene on his unpaid leave. At home, he works the night shift as a factory worker at Suominen’s nonwovens company in Nakkila. The next work shift is July 27.
“It’s been going really well so far when I’ve combined sports and work. Fortunately, there is flexibility in work, that’s how good an employer is,” Seppänen said.
Seppänen will also be able to compete in the European Championships in Munich in August.
“At least I’m still in the EC ranking.”
The number one in Seppänen’s qualifying group was the American who threw in front of the home crowd Daniel Haugh79.34.
Aaron Kangas will throw later on Friday in the second qualifying group.
