Athletics European Championships | The saber heroine celebrated her victory until the wee hours: “Confused and confused feeling”

EC gold increased Murro’s market value. In two big international contracts, a significant bonus for the championship was already ready.

About the winners it is usually said that they are tired but happy.

Pole vault European champion Wilma Murto makes no exception to this.

“Confused and confused feeling”, Murto described his mood at the Finnish team’s celebration on Thursday.

CEO of the Finnish Sports Association (SUL). Harry Aalto gave a short speech to Murro before the event began and handed him the president of the republic Sauli Niinistön congratulatory letter sent by

Already earlier, Niinistö had congratulated Murto with the words “amazing secrecy”. Murto was born in Kuusjoki, which is now part of Salo. Niinistö was born in Salo.

“Wilma’s career has had a lot of bumps along the way. Sometimes he has fallen here and there. He is a good example of what can be achieved with passion, and we get to enjoy that now,” said Aalto.

Murro’s manager Tero Heiska reminded that without those difficult bumps, Murto would not be a celebrated gold medalist.

Murro has had many injuries and difficult periods. In the winter, he injured his foot in an indoor competition and it took time to recover.

“There are bigger things than sports, life is comprehensive”, Murto philosophizes.

Murto hadn’t even managed to read all the congratulations he received, let alone reply to them.

One of the congratulators was Armand Duplantiswho jumped the WC gold while also winning the world record 521 cents.

The Swede praised Murto with poetic turns of phrase. Duplantis jumps from the European Championship on Saturday.

“It feels good to be praised by such a person,” Murto said.

Wednesday’s and the night between Thursday Murto had celebrated his EC gold with his family in the city in Munich. The party had continued until the wee hours and there had been little sleep at night.

“They say that death pays off sleep debts. After the race, I was still on such hard laps that it was difficult to pull them down immediately. I can’t sleep after the race anyway,” Murto said.

As a party drink, Murto said he had a little sparkling wine. He had earned it.

Murro’s season continues on August 26 in the Diamond League competition in Lausanne. After that, he and Duplantis will be a good attraction in the match against Sweden at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki at the beginning of September.

If things go well in Lausanne, Murto can get enough extra points to qualify for the Diamond League finals in Zurich.

According to manager Heiska, EC gold increased Murro’s market value.

“Wilma had two contracts ready with Puma and Red Bull. Wilma’s potential championship was taken into account in the contracts. The amounts are significant,” Heiska said.

How about what would the champion himself want as a reward other than the EC gold medal?

“If only I could get that first. I can’t hope for anything. I don’t play sports because of that,” Murto said before Thursday evening’s award ceremony.

SUL rewards Murro with a bonus of 10,000 euros, 25 percent of which goes to the coach according to the contract.

According to Heiska, a party will be organized when the competition calendar permits.

“There have been a lot of inquiries, without a doubt.”

Murro’s coach Jarno Koivunen was going to enjoy market coffees at least for the first time when he gets back to Turku.
