The community of Atafona, in São João da Barra, located northeast of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, has become an example of the erosion problem in the country. Global warming, combined with the sedimentation of the Paraíba River that has allowed the sea to advance, has accelerated the erosion of the Atafona coast and caused the destruction of 500 houses, including the collapse of a four-story building next to the beach.
Sea level in this region has risen 13 cm in the last 30 years and could rise another 16 cm by 2050. Coastal areas in Atafona will suffer a sea advance of 150 meters in the next 28 years, according to estimates by experts.
