President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said at the Future Summit, an event held by the United Nations in New York, that the Sustainable Development Goals were “the greatest diplomatic undertaking in recent years and are on track to become our greatest collective failure.” At the current pace of implementation, he stressed, only 17% of the 2030 Agenda targets will be achieved on time.
The Brazilian president recalled that at the COP28 Climate Summit, a global assessment of the implementation of the goals of the Paris Agreement was carried out. “Current levels of greenhouse gas emission reductions and climate finance are insufficient to keep the planet safe.”
Given this scenario, Lula said, a global ethical assessment should be constructed in preparation for COP30. “In partnership with the Secretary-General (of the UN, António Guterres), in preparation for COP30, we will work towards a global ethical assessment, bringing together different sectors of civil society to think about climate action from the perspective of justice, equity and solidarity.”
The document to be drafted, the “Pact for the Future”, points out directions to be followed, addressing, in an unprecedented way, countries’ debt and international taxation. “The creation of a forum for dialogue between heads of state and government and leaders of international financial institutions promises to put the UN back at the center of the global economic debate,” he said.
Lula added that the Global Digital Compact is a starting point for inclusive digital governance, which reduces the asymmetries of a data-based economy and mitigates the impact of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.
The Global Alliance Against Hunger, an initiative of Brazil’s presidency of the G20, was also emphasized in the Brazilian president’s speech at the UN. “During the presidency of the G20, Brazil will launch a Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty to accelerate the overcoming of these scourges.”
