She arrived at the hospital with a fracture of the neck of the femur, she underwent surgery to implant a hip prosthesis and 36 hours after the operation she was already on her feet. Any particular signs of the patient? She is 101 years old. The Bassini hospital in Cinisello Balsamo, a Milanese hinterland, which followed the case, tells the story of Mrs. Maria (not her real name). For the woman, a very quick operation, the care of an expert team and a recovery in record time for a centenarian.
The operation, the facility explains, was performed urgently and involved a team of orthopedists and anesthesiologists led by Roberto Vanelli, director of Orthopedics, and Angelo Pezzi, director of Anesthesia and Resuscitation at Bassini. “A 45 minute operation – reports Vanelli – of a hip prosthesis to replace the head of the femur under spinal anesthesia”. Surgery, he adds, “perfectly successful, without complications, thanks to teamwork and the consolidated experience of our teams”.
Therefore, just 36 hours after the operation, Mrs Maria took her first steps in the ward, accompanied by physiotherapists led by Elena Parolo, director of Rehabilitation. “Such an early recovery of walking in elderly patients – underlines Vanelli – depends on several factors including timely surgical treatment, fundamental nursing care in terms of general care, specialist nursing and collaboration with physiotherapists for early mobilization and the role fundamental role of anesthesiologists in pain management”.
