DUBAI (Reuters) – At least three people were killed in a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in southern Iran early on Saturday (local time), state television reported.
“Unfortunately so far we have had three deaths and eight injured,” Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, head of emergency management in the province of Hormozgan, on the coast of Iran’s Gulf, told television.
Iranian media cited the quake’s strength at 6.1, while the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said the quake had a magnitude of 6.0. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, EMSC said.
Major fault lines crisscross Iran, which has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years.
