At least ten dead in the fire of a nursing home in Villafranca de Ebro (Zaragoza)

At least ten people have died, as confirmed by the Civil Guard, in the fire at the Jardines de Villafranca nursing home, in the town of Villafranca de Ebro (Zaragoza). There is another person in critical condition. The fire, of which the causes are currently unknown, has been completely extinguished.

As reported by the Government of Aragon, there were 82 people in the residence at the time of the fire. Firefighters from the Zaragoza City Council, Civil Guard, Civil Protection Volunteers, psychologists, social workers, and 061 health resources are working at the scene, as well as medical personnel from the Alfajarín and Fuentes de Ebro health centers. Likewise, they have pre-alerted the Royo Villanova, Miguel Servet and Clínico Universitario hospitals.

The Minister of Finance and Interior of the regional Executive, Roberto Bermúdez de Castro, and the manager of the Aragonese Institute of Social Services, Ángel Val, move to the area. Fernando Beltrán, the Government delegate in Aragon, has regretted this event in his X account and has indicated that they remain “very attentive to the evolution of the two critically injured and the investigation into the causes of the fire.”

The firefighters received the notification from 112 at 4:57 a.m., when all the necessary emergency personnel began to mobilize. Once they arrived at the scene, according to the body, they found the fire that caused “a large amount of smoke, saturating practically the entire premises.” In addition to extinguishing the fire, firefighters began evacuating the elderly who lived in the residence.

This Friday the meeting of the spokesperson board was scheduled for 9:15 a.m. It remains to be seen if it will finally take place, although due to the seriousness of the events it is likely that it will end up being suspended.
