At least 51 people were killed and 20 others were injured after a coal mine exploded in Iran’s South Khorasan province on Saturday (21.Sep.2024). The accident was reportedly caused by a methane leak, according to information from Iranian state agency.
According to IRNA, there were 69 workers at the mine, which is run by the mining company Madanjoo. Of these, 24 are still missing.
The governor of South Khorasan said the rescue operation was complex and the death toll was expected to rise. “It is a difficult task to rescue the injured from a depth of 700 meters diagonally and 250 meters vertically underground”he stated.
Pezeshkian offered condolences to the families of the victims. He said he was following the case and that an investigation into the incident was underway. “I have spoken to ministers and we will do our best to provide assistance“.
