YENAGOA, Nigeria (Reuters) – At least 31 people died in Nigeria on Saturday during a church riot in southern Rivers State, according to a police spokeswoman.
Hundreds of people who turned out to receive food at the church early Saturday stormed a gate, causing the ruckus, Rivers State Police spokeswoman Grace Iringe-Koko said.
“People arrived early and some got impatient and started to advance, which led to the riot. Police are on-site monitoring the situation while the investigation is ongoing,” Iringe-Koko said.
