Many people were injured in the most important milestone of the Hindu religious calendar
A stampery at the world’s largest religious meeting in India killed at least 15 people and many more were injured, a doctor from the Kumbh Mela festival in Prayagraj told AFP.
«At least 15 people have died for now. Others are being treated, ”said the doctor in the city of Prayagraj, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.
An AFP photographer saw rescuers and faithful evacuating the victims of the place and people jumping a barrier.
Mortal agglomerations are a noticeable characteristic of the Indian religious festivals, and the Kumbh Mela, with its unfathomable devotees, already had a shady history of mortal agglomerations before the last incident during the night.
Local government official Akanksha Rana told the news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) that the stampede began after the crowd control barriers “broke.”
The six -week festival is the most important milestone of the Hindu religious calendar, and millions of people were expected to be present on Wednesday for a sacred ritual bath day at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers.
