At least 11 people have died in landslides in southwestern Colombia on Tuesday. Which reports the Colombian National Disaster Relief UNGRD. Dozens of people were injured and at least 15 people are still missing.
The mudslides were caused by heavy rainfall in San Miguel, in the department of Narino, near the border with Ecuador. Rescue operations were suspended Tuesday evening because of the rain there was a chance of more landslides. Rescue efforts are expected to resume on Wednesday.
Landslides are common in mountainous Colombia, especially during the rainy season and in areas where rickety homes and narrow roads are built on deforested Andean hills. The rainy season in Colombia is from mid-March to May and from September to mid-December. In 2017, more than 300 people were killed by landslides near the city of Mocoa.
