Sometimes, on the roads, we find old-fashioned drivers in a slow procession towards the destination of their car journey. It is not the norm, but an 80-year-old is usually more likely to be within the speed limit than a novice driver. However, this is not the case with an 80-year-old man who lives in the South Australia region, the area of the oceanic state with Adelaide as its capital: he was caught by the police at a speed of 182 kilometers per hour, where the limit was 100. Almost double.
The old man at full throttle was aboard his Subaru Impreza WRX, certainly a car able to give emotions to those who drive it and to reach speeds far beyond those allowed by the road codes of the whole world. However, he chose the wrong time to step on the accelerator: because of this human traffic offense the driver’s license has been withdrawn (for six months) and will have to pay a fine of 1,814 Australian dollars, at the exchange rate about 1100 euros. The infringement took place in broad daylight, around 14:45, and the man would not have resisted.
The police wanted to punish the man, without discounts, to signal to all motorists that the situation on the roads is worrying. In fact, some unfortunate accidents, including fatal ones, have recently occurred: road deaths have increased in the region, as many as 64 and up by 12% compared to 2020.
“Highway patrols will continue to have a strong presence along major roads and highways, as well as among rural municipalities, with speed detection, vehicle fitness checks, alcohol and drug use tests“, Declared the police. It is unclear whether the 80-year-old was in a state of intoxication when he was stopped during his high-speed lap, but in any case he will no longer be able to dare to try this ‘feat’ again in the coming months.
