“I think theAston Martin Vantage F1 Edition is able to tick all the requirements. This is a good mix in terms of weight, handling and size of the car, as well as power. When you are on the track and you play with it for a while, the car follows what you do and this is a really good sign, because at that point you no longer wonder what you have to do to have fun, everything happens naturally.“. To speak so it is Sebastian Vettel, official driver of the Aston Martin F1 team, after having tested the Vantage F1 Edition at the Silverstone circuit. Vettel can thus define himself as one of the few Formula 1 drivers to have ‘also driven’ the championship safety car, net of the specific practical and aesthetic differences of the car where Bernd Maylander works.
This particular edition of the Vantage is, according to the British manufacturer, the sportiest version dedicated to fun on the track of the entire range. The development of the new Aston Martin Vantage F1 Edition also benefited from the fundamental contribution of Tobias Moers, Gaydon’s number one, who was able to pass on all of his experience, accumulated over the years driving the Mercedes AMG division. Although under the leadership of the volcanic Lawrence Strollhe can never be one hundred percent sure of keeping his job.
At the heart of this evolution of the Vantage is the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, whose output has been increased by 25hp to a new maximum of 535hp. On the other hand, the torque of 685 Nm is unchanged, but the peak is sustained longer in order to further increase the handling of the engine and the performance of the gearbox. The increased power receives the fundamental contribution of the 8-speed automatic transmission, with an optimized torque limitation in high gears to reduce shift times and increase the sense of immediacy and precision. Aston Martin technicians worked on the stiffness and structure of the chassis, with some changes also to the suspension that made the steering wheel response even more direct.
Improved aerodynamics to provide positive front and rear downforce results in a specific aero kit that includes the full-width front splitter and generous rear wing, unchanged from that seen on the F1 Safety Car. Then there is no modification to the diffuser, which with its structure contributes to maximizing performance. For the first time, Vantage is fitted with 21-inch diamond-tipped wheels in satin black, wrapped in lower-profile Pirelli wheels, another choice that improves stability and control even at high speeds. Aston Martin was already working on a hyper-fast Vantage before agreeing with the championship to put a new Safety Car on track: but the two projects at that point ‘simply’ went on together.
