The author and theatrical director this evening will be at the event in favor of Regeni at the Teatro Duse in Genoa
To really understand Giulio’s story, we need to go back to the body, that body on which the mother saw all the evil in the world ». The words of Ascanio Celestini lead along a reasoning that crosses other lives, other deaths and intersects our history from the concentration camps to Pasolini. Author, actor, director Celestini this evening, at 9 pm, will be in Genoa, at the Duse Theater to participate in “Doing things together for Giulio”, an evening organized by Paola and Claudio Regeni and the lawyer Alessandra Ballerini. The list of participants in presence and online is very long, from Stefano Accorsi to Liliana Segre, from Luca Bizzarri to Fiorella Mannoia. At the end of the speech by Roberto Fico, president of the Chamber.
Celestini, you told Giulio.
«I don’t follow the story of Giulio and his family from a technical and legal point of view. My task is to recontextualize events, which we know through the news, within a human and daily narrative. In the newspapers we read what happened to him, I tell what child he was, what student he was, what son he was. This makes us feel empathically closer, so his story concerns us directly ».
What struck you about the parents?
«The phrase that Paola repeats“ I saw all the evil in the world on Giulio’s body ”. It is a definition that makes us understand a lot of this story and others. I am thinking of Federico Aldrovandi, Stefano Cucchi, of many migrants and, going further afield, of those deported to concentration camps. These stories can be understood if we go back to talking about the bodies that suffer, that are violated. Each of us has a body, this element makes us feel closer. Thus a migrant becomes a body to be saved, a person. Let’s not forget that Giulio was tortured and killed ».
There are cases like that of Federico Aldrovandi and Stefano Cucchi in which showing photos of tortured bodies changed everything.
“It was a fundamental change, a painful, dramatic choice. We take it upon ourselves to tell the stories of people who had bodies. We think of the violence in the extermination camps, the people considered pieces. If we speak of a million Tutsis as a million cockroaches, genocide becomes a hygienic fact. The body classifies us as human beings. And we go back to ancient times, to Antigone ».
What do you think of the work of our governments in the Regeni case?
“Our governments all have the same responsibility, they haven’t done much. Apart from someone who expressed personal closeness to the family, like Roberto Fico. In relation to countries that use violence as an instrument of government, there are important measures to be taken, from the embargo to the interruption of diplomatic relations. Economic relations with Egypt are very flourishing. These links have been clearly described in an editorial by Ernesto Galli della Loggia. I do not think we can accept to name a square or a street after Giulio, perhaps near the Egyptian embassy in Italy. Here we are beyond cynicism if we think of transforming the document into a monument. It is a negationist operation ».
Meanwhile, Patrick Zaki has been released, not cleared.
«Zaki is alive precisely because we are talking about him and we have talked about him. But how many, in silence, we do not know what happened to them? We who deal with words must make ourselves available ».
She takes the Pasolini Museum to the theater. They also raged on his body.
«What was done to Pasolini’s body is a signature, it is what the fascists did to the partisans. I think of Amedeo Zamboni: 15 years old, he is referred to as Mussolini’s bomber in 1926. He is massacred on the spot. They recognized him by the nose, as for Regeni. It’s that violence there “
