Israel is rushing forward with the third vaccination against Corona. All people over the age of 60 can now be vaccinated against corona for the third time – on one condition.
Tel Aviv – Israel is the first country in the world to allow residents aged 60 and over to get a third vaccination if their second vaccination has been at least five months ago.
Despite an intensive vaccination campaign, the number of new infections in Israel is rising rapidly again. That is why the government decided to booster vaccinations with Biontech / Pfizer.
Corona booster vaccination not yet approved in the EU and USA
The booster vaccinations have not yet been approved in either the US or the EU, and Israeli experts had warned that the benefits and risks of a third-party vaccination had not yet been adequately researched. The Israeli government decided to go it alone after Pfizer and Biontech pointed out studies that a third dose of their vaccine * had “a neutralizing effect on the Delta variant”.
Israel starts third corona vaccinations
The third vaccination is primarily intended to protect older and particularly vulnerable people from serious disease courses with the delta variant. In mid-July, Israel had therefore already started giving third doses to patients whose immune systems were weakened, for example due to organ transplants, cancer or kidney failure. Now everyone over 60 can have a third injection.
Israel allows corona vaccinations for children aged five and over
At the same time, vaccinations are now also allowed for five to eleven year old children who have an increased risk of becoming seriously ill or dying if they are infected. In addition, it is again mandatory to wear a mask for indoor use. If you want to visit sports halls, restaurants or hotels, you also have to present a vaccination certificate again.
The steps are necessary to protect public health without jeopardizing people’s livelihoods, Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz told Israeli television station Channel 12 on Saturday. “The economy must remain open,” he added: “I want a lockdown avoid any price ”. Everything stays open, “but we need masks and we need vaccines.”
Israel: 60 percent of the population fully vaccinated
Israel was one of the first countries that the pandemic had meanwhile largely brought under control with a rapid vaccination campaign. With the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant, the number of infections has increased significantly again. On Saturday, the Ministry of Health reported 2,435 new infections within 24 hours – a new high since March. 326 infected people had to go to hospital, more than since April.
Almost 60 percent of Israel’s 9.3 million residents are fully vaccinated against the virus. But around a million still refuse to be vaccinated.
Hundreds of people demonstrated in Tel Aviv against the government’s new measures on Saturday. Some waved a banner that read “There is no pandemic, it is a hoax”. The vaccines were linked to the Third Reich on a poster. Read more about the corona situation in Germany here. (afp) * Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
