There is a serious shortage of coroners. The situation in Twente is even dire, it turned out last week. “The stretch is out,” says forensic doctor Sanne Mensink. “But it is and remains beautiful, grateful work.”
A forensic doctor performs physical examinations for the police in sex cases and provides medical assistance to detainees, for example. But an important task is to determine in the event of a death whether it is a natural or unnatural death. A non-natural death occurs in the case of, for example, an overdose of drugs, a traffic accident, suicide, but also when a crime is suspected.
The medical ears and eyes of the police
When a body is found, the GGD doctors are the medical ears and eyes of the police and the judiciary in case of doubt. They examine a body from head to toe to find clues that will help determine the cause of death, and they figure out when someone has died. It is an external fireplace. That distinguishes them from the pathologist, who performs autopsies and cuts open bodies.
