Arsenal have dealt with arch-rival Tottenham Hotspur in the always fraught North London derby. Arsenal finished 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium thanks to goals from Thomas Partey, Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka. Harry Kane scored the only goal for Tottenham from the penalty spot.
Arsenal’s victory was certainly not unjustified today. Mikel Arteta’s team was the better team from the start and took the lead after twenty minutes of play. Tottenham collapsed so much that Thomas Partey gave it a try from outside the penalty area. With the inside foot, the Ghanaian sent the ball beautifully into the top corner.
However, Arsenal did not go into halftime with a lead, as ten minutes later Harry Kane was able to take advantage of the home side’s clumsy defense. Arsenal couldn’t get the ball out of their own penalty area, after which Gabriel started a stupid sliding. Richarlison went over the leg and the referee pointed to the dot. As usual, Harry Kane took responsibility. The Tottenham striker shot the ball straight through the middle and so signed for the 1-1.
Tottenham came into the game slightly better after the equalizer, but it was Arsenal who took the lead again after the break. The normally reliable goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made a flashy mistake, after which Gabriel Jesus was able to score the 2-1 from very close by.
It was the beginning of the end for Tottenham, because not much later Antonio Conte’s team ended up with ten men. Emerson kicked Martinelli’s ankle hard on the sidelines and received a direct red card. From that moment on, Tottenham lost and five minutes later Granit Xhaka closed the game for good. The surplus was used well and Xhaka was able to shoot in the 3-1 completely free.
Thanks to the three points, Arsenal is once again assured that it is the leader after this round of play. With 21 points from eight games, the gap with Manchester City is four points. However, the reigning champion will still play tomorrow in the city derby against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United. Tottenham could have taken over the lead from Arsenal today, but are stuck at 17 points due to the defeat.
