At least three people died, including two suspects and a civilian, and five other people were injured, including three police officers, in an armed attack that took place this Tuesday (6) against the Palace of Justice checkpoint in Istanbul, according to the Turkish Interior Ministry.
The attack occurred at 11:46 am (local time, 5:46 am Brasília time), when two gunmen fired at the police checkpoint at the entrance to the Palace of Justice, home to several courts.
“Today there was an attempted terrorist attack against the checkpoint in front of Gate C of the Çaglayan Courts. It was determined that the traitors, named EY and PB, who were neutralized, were members of the terrorist organization DHKP/C,” stated the Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.
Police officers guarding the entrance to the courts retaliated and, in the subsequent shootout, both shooters were killed. The Turkish press indicates that one of the suspects was a woman.
Yerlikaya attributed responsibility for the attack to the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C), a radical left-wing armed group that has carried out attacks in Turkey for nearly half a century, including against United States interests in the country.
This is the second attack in Istanbul in the last ten days. Previously, on January 28, a 52-year-old Turkish citizen died after an attack by the Islamic State on a Catholic church.
The DHKP/C did not claim recent attacks, but it has attacked this same Istanbul court in the past: in March 2015, two of its members managed to enter the premises and murdered a prosecutor in his office.
