Unfortunately the director of Masaniello and many other important projects have passed away. We remember him precisely through his works.
Armando Pugliese he was a highly appreciated actor and theater director. He studied with Luca Ronconi and he also collaborated, quickly becoming friends, with Elvio Porta. Born in Naples 76 years ago, he has worked in highly successful works.
Despite his age he was very active both in the theater and on social networks, where he had a large following. He brought great people on stage masters of arts and literature like Italo Calvino, Orazio Costa Giovangigli, Luca De Filippo, Turi Ferro.
Armando Pugliese began his career as a playwright thanks to Italo Calvino, who commissioned him the Baron in the Trees for the theatrical performance. Since then you have brought many literary texts to the stage.
In the 1980s he decided to move to Mola di Bari. Here he founded his permanent theater workshop with the Teatro Sud cooperative. During his career he created 160 productions for the most important permanent theaters in our country, but he also worked for private companies.

His Masaniello, written with Elvio Porta, is certainly the most important legacy that Armando Pugliese has left us. Also very important is La Pelle, based on the work by Curzio Malaparte. He also directed Luca De Filippo’s company O scarfalietto by Eduardo Scarpetta, Ogni anno punto e a capo and Questo Fantasmi by Eduardo De Filippo.
Furthermore, he has won many awards throughout his career, such as the Ubu prize, the Agis Golden Ticket and Gli Olimpici del Teatro. The last direct theatrical show is dated 2023, with Roberto Alajmo’s The Sleep Company for the Theater of Naples.
