Honda took advantage of the tests carried out in Misano after the San Marino Grand Prix and Pol Espargarò’s test is proof of this. In any case, the level it manages to express remains moving and legendary Marc Marquez despite an unpredictable opponent and destined to be the most difficult to beat: his right arm. Francesco Bagnaia tried in every way to shake off the eight-time world champion and in the final of the race he was also succeeding only to find himself on the ground at Misano-1 a few laps from the checkered flag. Marquez had never tried the attack against Bagnaia, even if especially at the exit of the Quercia – coincidentally a curve to the left – he managed to recover meters on the Ducati rider. However, already being able to stay in Pecco’s exhausts was a feat that led to the third victory of the season.
Behind Fabio Quartararo, who has won five races, is Marc Marquez in terms of stage victories, ahead of Francesco Bagnaia and Jack Miller side by side at an altitude of two. An exceptional fact in light of the conditions in which the 1993 class still finds itself, still struggling with a right arm that significantly limits its effectiveness and explosiveness on the track. Crossing the finish line yesterday Marc Marquez proudly ‘exhibited’ his injured arm at Jerez in July 2019, a injury managed in an approximate and hasty manner to the point of jeopardizing the survival of the limb following an infection. Marquez’s goal was to get on the podium on a ‘right-handed’ track and Bagnaia’s crash turned the podium into a victory. If in the post-race in Austin the Catalan phenomenon was almost angry about the difficulty in making a difference in Texas due to his right arm – on a Sunday anyway dominated – after the Misano race Marquez was definitely smiling because it is a psychologically important result in view of 2022.
The Honda rider admitted that the dynamics of the weekend, which saw the riders racing in the rain on Friday and Saturday, also helped him to be ‘fresh’ on the starting grid on Sunday. After a few moments of serious difficulty experienced after his return, situations in which he even considered stopping, Marquez is closing 2021 with an ascending parable. The 2022 calendar features the record figure of 21 races very close: to compete against Fabio Quartararo and Francesco Bagnaia a more competitive Honda and a tug-of-war will be needed, figuratively speaking of course. The premises, however, are less dark than in fact experienced in several weekends of the season that is now heading towards sunset.
