Argentina's senators approved this Thursday (18) a strong salary adjustment for themselves, which sparked outrage from President Javier Milei.

The gross salary will increase from 1.9 million Argentine pesos (R$11.5 thousand) to 6.7 million (R$40.4 thousand). The net will be increased from 1.7 million pesos (R$ 10.3 thousand) to 4.5 million (R$ 27.2 thousand).

According to the Clarín newspaper, the measure was endorsed by Milei's vice-president and president of the Senate, Victoria Villarruel, who had already publicly stated that legislators' salaries would be “low”.

“This is how the caste acts… The only seven who voted against are the senators from Liberdade Avança [partido do presidente]. In 2025, it will be a historic beating”, wrote Milei in X, in reference to the mid-term legislative elections that will be held next year.

In March, Argentine deputies and senators had approved a 30% increase, which would increase their salaries to 2.5 million pesos (R$15,100).

Under pressure from Milei, they backed down, but a movement of senators from the Argentine countryside ended up bringing the issue back to the agenda. In the Chamber of Deputies, there is also pressure for a salary adjustment.
