The former president of Argentina Mauricio Macri said on Monday (03) that the country needs “a profound change” because it comes from decades of “decay” and has a democracy that is the “most failed” on the planet in the “last 50 years”.
Macri, who is in Spain to attend the inauguration of the Master’s program in Global and International Studies at the University of Salamanca (USAL), did not reveal whether he will run in Argentina’s next presidential elections, although in statements to journalists he said that his party, the Together for Change, “is united and ready to start ruling next year.”
For Macri, who presided over Argentina from 2015 to 2019, it is necessary to “take back and put” the country in the “direction it was taking until 2019”, when his successor, Alberto Fernández, took over the government.
According to him, it is necessary “to continue to deepen the debate on the reforms that Argentina needs”.
“Our country needs a profound change, because it comes from many decades of decadence. We must be the most failed democracy on the planet in the last 50 years and we have to reverse this with new ideas”, he declared.
The former Argentine president also said that some of the measures adopted by the current Argentine government are “populist”, approaches that he views “with concern” and that, according to him, “do not bring well-being or a future, but poverty”.
Elections in Brazil
Macri also commented on the first round of presidential elections in Brazil. According to the Argentine politician and businessman, “despite the tense elections and very opposing positions”, they were held in a spirit of “democracy and peace”.
As for the second round scheduled for October 30, Macri said that the election has a “very important” weight for “Argentina and for the South American region”.
