Argentina has passed the 100,000 corona death mark despite its sometimes strict exit restrictions.
Buenos Aires – Compared to the previous day, according to data from the Ministry of Health in Buenos Aires on Wednesday evening (local time) there were 614 deaths related to Covid-19, bringing the total to 100,250 since the outbreak of the pandemic.
More than 4.7 million people in the South American country have been infected with the corona virus. Argentina has around 45 million inhabitants, more than a third of whom live in the greater Buenos Aires area.
The virus killed the entire population of a medium-sized city, wrote the Argentine newspaper “La Nación”. Argentina is one of the countries with the highest number of corona fatalities per million inhabitants. Latin America – in addition to Argentina, for example, Peru and Brazil – is currently particularly hard hit.
At the beginning of winter in the southern hemisphere, the second corona wave hit Argentina hard. In order to contain the pandemic, the government had already imposed very tough curfews in mid-March last year, which were repeatedly extended.
This made it possible to slow down the spread of the coronavirus and prevent a collapse of the health system. After months of restrictions, however, the discipline of the population also decreased significantly. (dpa)
