Argentina could face shortages of coffee and other products

Due to the exchange restrictions in Argentina, there are already several manufacturers of different imported products that warn about a possible shortage at the national level, among others, of coffee.

The country is already facing shortages of toilet paper and other items of perfumery and cleaning, slowed down by restrictions on imports. The import quota was reduced for coffee manufacturers and that is why coffee shop chains and manufacturers warned that supply is in danger.

For the time being, talks are being held with the Central Bank, while the union insists that they only have reserves for about 60 or 70 days, but that even earlier people may begin to feel scarce on supermarket shelves.

The country’s hard currency reserves are declining; its foreign bonds, which have just been restructured in 2020 after a third default of payment in this century, they are quoted at only 20 cents per dollar; and the gap between the parallel exchange rate -at 295 pesos per dollar- and the official exchange rate -at 127 per dollar- shot up to levels not seen since the last devaluation panic of 2020.

To make matters worse, President Alberto Fernández is locked in a turf war with his powerful vice president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
