(Reuters) – Argentina’s national soccer team beat Uruguay 1-0 on Friday with an Ángel Di María goal and maintained second place in the South American qualifiers for the 2022 Qatar World Cup in a match in which star Lionel Messi started on the bench and entered in the closing minutes.
With the victory five matches from the end of the competition, Argentina reached 28 points in the leaderboard. Brazil leads with 34 points and on Thursday became the first South American team to qualify for the World Cup after beating Colombia.
Uruguay is out of the classification zone with 16 points, the same as Chile and Colombia, fourth and fifth in terms of goal difference.
For the first time in qualifying, Messi was not part of the starting lineup due to a physical problem that prevented him from participating in the last matches against Paris Saint Germain.
