Archeology Archaeologists discovered Peru in a fetal position and ropes at least 800 years old

More than 7,000 years old mummies have been found.

Archaeologists have found a mummy at least 800 years old on the outskirts of Lima, the capital of Peru. The mummified and fetal body was wrapped in ropes and its hands were placed on its face, suggesting local funeral traditions, according to researchers.

Possibly up to 1,200-year-old mummy was found in an underground tomb that also contained pottery, vegetable remains and rocky seats, Reuters reports.

In Peru the bodies were embalmed for the first time more than 7,000 years ago, a couple of thousand years before the Egyptians.

Hundreds of mummies from the ancient Chincorro culture have been found. Chincorro culture influenced the regions of present-day Chile and Peru.

Last July, the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared Chincorro mummies found in northern Chile as a World Heritage Site.
