A few days ago, there was an archaeological discovery that went around the world. It is a pre-Hispanic wooden sculpture found in the citadel of Chan Chan, in northern Peru, which is representative of a large indigenous community.
According to the archaeologist Arturo Paredes, head of the special state project that investigates Chan Chan, The piece of wood was in perfect condition and was part of the Chimú culture, an ethnic group that inhabited that Peruvian region before the Spanish conquest.
Paredes explained that the sculpture may have been made between 850 and 1470 ADa time when the Chimú culture was beginning to establish itself.

This discovery was made in the Huaca Takaynamo, a pyramidal structure, authentic from the pre-Hispanic period, located in Chan Chan. This citadel is located on the outskirts of the city of Trujillo, 500 kilometers north of the capital, Lima.
This crypt was a ceremonial center of the community, where they celebrated a wide variety of rites such as human burials and tributes to the feline deities they venerated.
Chan Chan, whose name means “bright sun” in the native language, is recognized because it was raised and built with adobe and mud, being the largest city in Latin America built with these materials.
In addition, it is one of the most attractive places of pre-Hispanic culture in Peru, along with Machu Picchu and Caral.
The citadel reached an area of 20 square kilometers at the time when the indigenous community was present and had around 30,000 inhabitants.

As seen in the images obtained by the researchers, the piece recreates a character with a trapezoid-shaped hat, which is decorated with vertical lines of a dark color.
She is painted red and her eyes are blue. Her face is flat, oval and she has a nose that protrudes from her face.. Next to the sculpture, nectandra seeds were found which, according to the deductions of the experts, must have formed the character’s necklace.
