It is not the first case, in fact, this type of action is starting to be very normal, taking into account the amount of Apple Watch that there are assets in the world. And it was one of those devices that called for help when a cyclist fell, was unconscious and bleeding from the head. All this was detected by the Apple smartwatch’s Fall Detection system that called the 911 (192 in Brazil).
The Hermosa Beach Police in Los Angeles County, California, were called to the place that the clock indicated to the emergency services as being where the injured person would be.

Apple equipped these devices with technology that was once credited with being lifesavers. When the watch detects a drop, it starts a 60 second countdown. If it’s OK after the fall, you can stop counting before emergency services are called.
However, if you are truly unconscious, the Apple Watch will automatically call the emergency number. This call will inform first responders that someone has had a hard fall. The automated system also shares the coordinates of where the fall occurred with a radius of possible locations.
According to reports, a cyclist went for a night ride on his electric bike. Around one in the morning, a strong fall triggered the Apple Watch system, which immediately activated the distress call. Police responded to this information and discovered an unconscious cyclist on the road with a bleeding head. The injury required several days of hospitalization for the cyclist.
Drop detection works with Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Series 4 or later. Apple has updated the watch’s software to improve its fall detection performance during workouts, including cycling. Optimization is based on recognizing specific movements and impacts from falls during cycling and other activities. The watchOS 8 update also allows for fall detection only during workouts.
If Apple Watch Series 4 or later detects a serious drop while wearing the watch, it will begin to vibrate, sound an alarm, and display a warning. You can choose to contact emergency services or close the warning by pressing Close or tapping “I’m fine”.
If your Apple Watch detects that you are moving, it will wait for you to respond to the warning and will not automatically contact emergency services. If the watch detects that it has been idle for about 1 minute, it will automatically make the call.
When the call ends, the watch sends a message to emergency contacts with your location so they know that the watch has detected a serious fall and that you have contacted emergency services. The watch obtains emergency contacts from the Medical Record.
