Apple Inc unveiled 5G versions of its iPhone SE and iPad Air, kicking off what is likely to be its best year yet for new product launches, as reported by Bloomberg.
The company unveiled the devices during a virtual event Tuesday called “Peek performance.”
The event was the first of what is expected to be several product launches this year, with Apple also prepping the Mac and iPad, as well as the iPhone 14 and new smartwatches. You can also preview its first mixed virtual and augmented reality headset later this year.
The new iPhone is Apple’s first update to the SE lineup since 2020. The model, which will continue to be available in black, white and red, will be priced slightly higher at $429, up from $399 previously. But it has support for 5G network, a faster A15 processor and other features.
The iPhone SE still looks similar to the iPhone 8 from 2017, including a Touch ID home button, instead of the Face ID used by higher-end models. It has a 4.7-inch screen, making it the smallest iPhone available. But the addition of 5G makes the device much more competitive in the market and may help the company attract Android users and consumers with older iPhones.
Apple doesn’t break out sales of individual iPhone models, but the smartphone represents its biggest moneymaker, earning more than half of its revenue in the last fiscal year, or about $192 billion.
The SE first debuted in 2016 amid orders for a smaller, cheaper iPhone, and was upgraded prior to the start of the pandemic.
Apple also added new green color options to the iPhone 13, helping to keep that model in the news until the iPhone 14 arrives with an updated design later this year.
Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook also announced plans to bring Major League Baseball games to the company’s TV+ streaming service.
