The world is still in a state of pandemic for Covid-19, and the successive variants are probably to blame. Science has created protection solutions, but SARS-COV-2 variants have complicated the whole scenario. Antibodies that can neutralize coronavirus variants have recently been discovered.
A team of international scientists announced that they were able to identify antibodies capable of neutralizing the variants of the SARS-COV-2 virus. This virus has had several variants, currently standing out the omicron.

According to what has now been revealed, the type of antibodies discovered may attack parts of the “spike” protein, the master key that the SARS-COV-2 virus uses to infect cells in the body, which are not altered by mutations. The study has already been published in the journal “Nature”, where it is revealed that this discovery opens the door to the development of new vaccines and treatments that will be effective for variants that may eventually emerge in the future.
The omicron variant accumulates 37 mutations in the “spike” protein, which attaches itself to cells, invading and, consequently, generating infection. This is the main hypothesis to justify the speed with which this new variant spreads, as well as its ability to re-infect and reduce the vaccine’s effectiveness.
In tests carried out, the study reveals that those who had taken the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines maintained immunity to omicron, but reduced between 20 and 40%, much lower than against other variants. The booster dose has been shown to have the ability to restore immunity to more effective values.
The new variant of SARS-CoV-2, omicron, detected just over a month ago in South Africa is already considered to have the fastest spread.
