Anti-war protests end with 3,500 arrested in Russia

The demonstrations held this Sunday (6) in Russia, to call for an end to the invasion of Ukraine, called by opposition leader Alexey Navalny, ended with the arrest of at least 3,500 activists. The information was carried by Russian news agencies TASS and Interfax, whose source is the spokeswoman for the country’s Interior Ministry, Irina Volk.

Protests classified as unauthorized by the Kremlin took place in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities. According to Volk, around 2,500 people gathered in the capital, 1,700 of whom ended up being arrested. In Saint Petersburg, in turn, the demonstration had 1,500 participants, with half being held.

A spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry also said that 1,200 people were in protests in other regions of Russia, of which 1,061 were arrested.

Navalny called on people to take to the streets in Moscow and St Petersburg to demand an end to the invasion of Ukraine and protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Public Ministry and the Ministry of the Interior had already warned the population that participation in the acts would be punishable by imprisonment.
