Ana Villagómez has become one of the most visible faces of the fight against drug trafficking in the province of Cádiz and Spain. His constant work, his will for wanting to change things and his clarity, support him. About to meet … A year of that fateful and atrocious episode of the death of two civil guards in Barbate rolled by a narcolanche, his words have greater attention by the media but those words have not changed an apex for a long time. Villagómez is a delegate prosecutor of Cádiz since 2001 and from all over Andalusia since 2019 and, therefore, for the knowledge of the subject and its direct and daily contact with these investigations and procedures, it is a voice more than authorized.
– On Sunday a year of the death of two civil guards in Barbate is celebrated when they were overwhelmed by a narcolanche, how is the judicial investigation develop?
– The investigation continues in an instructional phase. The part of the defendants for smuggling (the first detainees), and now with these new investigated and having made part of that instruction, is supposed to be all faster. It is an issue with prison accused and has some preference for it, there are some deadlines. Everything is being taken in a very agile way but it is true that there are many parts and that slows down the cause in resources and others.
– The fact that a suspect is missing to stop, one of those who were supposedly on the narcolanche that rammed the agents and continues a fugitive, can you delay the celebration of the trial?
– It doesn’t have to. The cause can be followed perfectly against the rest of the defendants. It happens many times. Those who are and then be arrested are taken to the trial, those who are judged separately. It will not be an obstacle.
– As we say, one year of that February 9 is celebrated, do you think that since then there have been some improvements on judicial, police officers … to which this episode gave a greater impact and social impact?
– Well … it’s still similar. In the judicial field, Barbate was reinforced with a support judge but that is not enough. In addition, the problem is also the criminal prosecution law. There are too many procedures to meet in these procedures, it is not an agile operation. Now there will be some reforms but no more structure will be given than what is needed. Without more judges, prosecutors, officials … we will be in them. There is also talk of the new instance courts but it will not be enough.
– So your hope about judicial improvements in the fight against drug trafficking are scarce …
– Yes, hope is little. A total system renewal is needed. Something is improving but not enough. They are increasingly complex research and causes and the system is not at all appropriate to it.
– and meanwhile, they, the drug trafficking continue to traffic, committing crimes … just these days has seen that impunity or impunity for the waters of Cádiz. A year later on the same Barbate dock and for hours there have been betting boats, the Guadalquivir is crowded, they also now carry cocaine as demonstrated by the latest seizures, is the latter punctual or is it another reason for concern?
– Yes. It is one more step for organizations that were already settled in this area. Everything indicates that there is a drug change. They have greater profits, so they use more violence to avoid robberies … In addition, it is important to emphasize that it is not a situation of ours. They enter our territory but reach all of Europe. That makes the journeys longer and therefore extreme safety measures, both for the journey of that drug, and in nurseries. There are more weapons, more corruption to try to bribe those who watch more money … It’s another step, yes.
“A narcolacha is taken but there are twenty thousand. They are scratching, of course, but they pass the triple, the quadruple …”
– Do that cocaine traffic already clearly demonstrate that local river or strait clans, traditionally dedicated to hashish, have joined Colombian, Mexican international networks …?
– Clear. It is clear that there must be a cooperation with international bands. In the hashish that union of networks is with Morocco, in cocaine it is with Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico … so it is necessary to reinforce cooperation between the judicial forces that is also done and works. It is important to have and maintain that union.
– And what is the problem? Everything is already perfectly investigated and diagnosed. It is many years suffering that criminal activity throughout the coast of Cádiz … it is not new as you know well …
– I don’t know what the problem is but the narcolachas bell at ease. The Barbate spent a year ago and now the other day were there. It is very difficult to catch them. It is not easy. It is also very dangerous with the media. That is why I think we cannot demand from security forces that life are played, something is missing but we cannot allow it to happen. And it keeps passing, many deaths are already there. On the one hand and another.
– Do you worry that now with the issue of cocaine, that step, as it says, takes us to the Galicia of the drug and everything that this means in the corruption of public powers?
– Well … When they win more they will try to get to corrupt whoever, to all powers, in addition to having greater violence, threats and very dangerous situations that some we already know.
– But the government insists on the Special Security Plan of the Gibraltar Campo and its achievements, however we are in this situation …
– Yes, I see a great effort from the Ministry of Interior with the plan but it is clear that something fails. A narcolacha is taken but there are twenty thousand. They are scratching, of course, but they pass the triple, the quadruple … and of which we do not find out.
– He has been as a prosecutor for many years, do you think this is one of the worst moment of narco activity and its impunity in Andalusia?
– Well … we also pass the situation of the loss of authority in the Gibraltar field and that was stopped. But organizations did not leave, they are still here. Many leaders have been arrested from many organizations, and they are all free or escaped, or some convicted are still free of resources. Those may now be less active for the public, in networks, making videos … They are not dumb, but they are still there. And the cocaine that moves, someone has to handle: they make the same route, the same operandi modes … more means are needed to investigate because following them is increasingly complicated by the encrypted methods and channels they use … It is that many factors come together so that we can be effective.
– To all this has joined the logistics activity that accompanies them: the one known as ‘petaqueo’, those who are dedicated to these fuel drug traffickers for the boats; From the Prosecutor’s Office they insist on the need to be able to punish him criminally as a drug trafficking activity … will it be done?
– Yes, we have requested in the memoirs and by other channels that legislation on this activity itself is made. It is clear that it is a flattering and especially necessary behavior for drug trafficking. We see it in Los Caños de Sancti Petri, in Conil, Barbate, El Puerto, Sanlúcar … Many of those who do were dedicated before to hashish traffic. They see that they can earn 300 euros for carafe and that if they are taken, they do not run the same risk as with the drug. It is also very clear. If these people did not take them the gasoline there would not be so much narcolanche for all those sites, they could not navigate. We need legislative and more decisive support. There is no other anymore.
