Ansu Fati ended the duel against Dinamo and went through the locker room, but while the rest of his teammates went home, he stayed at the Camp Nou and moved to the club offices, where his parents and his representative, Jorge Mendes. Barcelona’s staff, led by President Joan Laporta, Economic Vice President Eduardo Romeu, and Football Director Mateu Alemany, also joined the meeting. It was an important night for Barça. Fati, the youth squad who inherited Messi’s 10th, renewed his contract until 2027 and will have a termination clause of 1,000 million.
Last week, Barça had tied Pedri. Yesterday it was Fati’s turn. “Dream teen”(Adolescent dream), he proclaimed. In December 2019, when he was barely showing his head at the Camp Nou, the youth squad had signed his last bond. Then, advised by Rodrigo Messi (brother of the former Barça captain), he agreed to a contract until 2022, with the option of extending it for two more seasons. But Barcelona did not want to make use of that option. The sports management wanted a new contract for Ansu Fati, the cornerstone of the new times.
The irruption of Ansu Fati in the 2019-2020 season surprised everyone at the Camp Nou, also in the Spanish team. The Barça squad made his debut in the first team on August 25, 2019 and became, at 16 years and 298 days, the second youngest player to wear the Barça shirt. A few days later, on September 3, he played his first game for the Red against Germany in the Nations League. He finished the campaign with 33 games (1,375 minutes), eight goals and one assist. To which he added four games, a goal and an assist in the national team.
Last season, when he was ready to consolidate in the first team of Barcelona, Ansu Fati suffered a partial tear of the meniscus in his left knee after a tackle by Madi in the game against Betis. The player chose to undergo surgery instead of conservative treatment. However, the recovery was complicated. He underwent surgery four times and was out for about 10 months. Against Levante, on September 26, he appeared again at the Camp Nou. It took him nine minutes on the field to score again.
Ansu Fati is the symbol of the new generation at Barcelona. To the figure of Fati (18) and Pedri (18), the centrals Ronald Araujo (22) and Mingueza (22) are added; the wingers, Alex Balde (18) and Dest (20); and the flyers, Nico González (19) and Gavi (17). Barcelona have already secured the future of Pedri and Ansu. The Canarian renewed until 2026 and the Guinean until 2027. The Barça club now hopes to agree on the new contracts for Araujo and Gavi.
