National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS) limited the percentage of annual adjustment that may be applied to regulated individual and family health plans to 6.91%. The increase will be valid for contracts carried out from in January in 1999.
The limit is valid for application between May in 2024 and April in 2025, in according to the month in contract anniversary.
The adjustment will affect the contracts of almost 8 million beneficiaries, which represents 15.6% of the 51 million health care plan consumers in Brazil, according to ANS.
The decision does not involve collective plans, whether corporate or by membership. In these plans, the adjustment should be greater, marking the third consecutive year of double-digit increases.
The increase announced this Tuesday, 4th, exceeds inflation by 3.22 percentage points, considering that in the last 12 months, the IPCA, the index used in the government’s inflation targets, was 3.69%. In 2023, the authorized adjustment was up to 9.63%.
“The index defined by ANS for 2024 reflects the variation in healthcare expenses incurred in 2023 compared to healthcare expenses in 2022 for beneficiaries of individual and family health plans. When we talk about health plans, the variation in expenses is directly associated with the variation in the cost of procedures and the frequency of use of health services”, said the CEO of ANS, Paulo Rebello.
Still in the release, the entity stated that it is not correct to compare the readjustment index with inflation, pointing out that inflation indices measure the variation in prices of products and services, while health plan readjustment indices are “value indices ”, as they measure the combined variation not only in prices, but also in quantities consumed.
