Mexico was once again in the news for a new fatal attack against a member of the press. Reporter Antonio de la Cruz was killed by gunshot wounds in the department of Ciudad Victoria, in the northern state of Tamaulipas. His daughter was also injured during the attack.
“Our colleague was attacked with bullets this Wednesday when he was leaving his home,” reported the newspaper ‘Expreso’, a medium for which De la Cruz worked, on its website.
“We demand that this crime not be another one that goes unpunished,” added the newspaper.
According to ‘Expreso’ in a statement, the journalist was attacked at the door of his house on Puerta de la Luna street, in Puerta de Tamatán and in the sequence his daughter, who is in stable condition, was also injured.
Tamaulipas, a border state with the US province of Texas, is characterized by the high presence of criminal groups and the activities that organized crime operates in the territory.
“Faced with this new act of violence, the publishing group Expreso-La Razón demands that Justice be done at all levels,” closed the letter from the media outlet for which the victim worked for 15 years. While Pedro Alfonso García Hernández, director of the newspaper, said that this is an attack on freedom of expression.

The murdered reporter was specialized in livestock activity and environmental issues. In addition, he was critical of government officials, from the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the mayor of Reynosa, to whom he dedicated his last post on Twitter calling him a “fugitive from justice.”
“The death of ‘Toño’ de la Cruz, a family man, a communication professional, is confirmed. This is an action in which the main suspects are those of the State government”, said the deputy of Tamaulipas for Citizen Movement, Gustavo Cárdenas.

De la Cruz is the twelfth journalist murdered on Mexican soil so far in 2022; Of that dozen, at least eight were due to his journalistic work, confirmed the Article 19 organization.
For its part, the Reporters Without Borders association described as “unprecedented” the scale of violence that falls on members of the press in Mexico, a nation that remains the most dangerous in the world for the profession.
