Yesterday, the Turkish and Israeli foreign ministers said that their security units had prevented attacks on Israelis in Turkey.
Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid thanked Turkey for coordinating efforts, during a press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, in Ankara.
Cavusoglu said Turkey would not “under any circumstances” allow such incidents on its soil, without naming any third country. The Turkish minister added that his country and Israel are “in close contact” regarding the threat. A Turkish news report said yesterday that Istanbul police had arrested five Iranians on charges of working for a suspected assassination squad that was preparing to target Israelis in Turkey.
Yesterday, Haberturk newspaper, reported that intelligence and counter-terrorism units raided apartments and hotels in Istanbul where the suspects were staying, and confiscated digital documents and two pistols with silencers.
The report came after Israel warned, last week, of carrying out attacks against Israelis in Istanbul.
Lapid’s visit is the first by an Israeli foreign minister in 16 years, according to the Turkish TRT network.
Cavusoglu visited Israel on the 25th of last month.
