Animals | The walrus died on the way to treatment – Korkeasaari plans to inform about the events in more detail today

According to Korkeasaari, the walrus that landed in Kotka was in poor condition, and the last few days were too hard for it.

Finland a walrus that got lost on the coast died on Tuesday evening on the way to the Korkeasaari wildlife hospital. In Korkeasaari, the walrus was supposed to receive first aid as well as liquid and food.

“The trials and the transport of the last few days were too heavy for the weak animal”, Korkeasaari said late on Tuesday evening on Twitter.

In Kotka, the walrus had been moved in a large box to a truck for transport. The animal was moved to the box with the help of a stretcher, and several people from Korkeasaari and the police participated in the operation.

Korkeasaari did not comment further on the matter to HS on Wednesday morning, but said that the matter would be announced later.

On Friday the walrus came ashore in Hamina, where the authorities and veterinarians monitored its condition.

On Tuesday, the walrus had found its way into the yard of a detached house in Kotka, where the local animal protection authority and the Korkeasaari veterinarian who was asked for official help found it to be in poor condition.

“The walrus is very starved, thin, and the layer of fat under its skin is so thin that this is probably why the animal no longer thrives in the water, but goes to land,” Korkeasaari said in its announcement on Tuesday.

Korkeasaari said that putting them to sleep and transporting them is risky for a large marine mammal.

Before starting the measures, Korkeasaari estimated that the walrus would probably not survive and find its way out of the Baltic Sea due to its poor condition.
