Animals | The rescue service told about a “seal” that was found dead – it was an otter

The animal that had been in the water for a long time turned out to be an otter.

In Keminmaa According to the police, the dead animal found yesterday was an otter and not a seal.

The rescue service of Lapland said yesterdaythat they had found a dead seal in the fisherman’s catch. The rescue service announced that the police will continue to investigate the matter.

Crime Commissioner of the Lapland Police Department Iikka Rantahalvari says by e-mail that the animal left in the broken ditch was an otter.

“So it wasn’t a seal, luckily. Although it’s not nice that even an otter experiences such a fate.”

An adult gray seal is about a couple of meters long and weighs 100–300 kilograms. The Baltic herring is slightly smaller, an adult individual is about a meter long and weighs 50–90 kilograms.

An otter, on the other hand, is 50–100 centimeters long and weighs around 5–10 kilograms. The otter also has four legs unlike the seal.

The rescue service said yesterday that the animal had been in the water for some time. Perhaps the resulting swelling had caused the rescue service to make a mistake about the sport.

No crime is suspected in the matter, and the police will not continue investigating the matter further.
