February The residents of Karhulinna Zoo, Korkeasaari Zoo, which has been awake for the last few days, have gone to hibernation. Korkeasaari talks about it on their website.

The inhabitants of Karhulinna, 20- and 15-year-old female bears, mother and daughter, have had the opportunity to decorate their four winter nests to their liking.

The approach of winter has been reflected in the behavior of Helsinki bears for some time. They have slept for half a day and have not just gone outside or touched their food.

Now the bears have calmed their sleep, and the door to their outdoor garden was closed on Tuesday as a sign of winter.

“It’s been a little quiet for a couple of days when we’ve gently peeked indoors. They sleep there in pitch black. The mother and daughter have probably both chosen their own nests, because from the beginning of the week they would shout a little at each other to take a little distance, ”the animal caretaker Susan Nuurtila says on the pages of Korkeasaari.

The bears on the High Island slept last winter in a three-month hibernation. During hibernation, the windows of the winter nests are darkened. The treatment room is not visited during the winter either, but the bears are observed from a small peephole.

The bear wakes up during the winter to change position and may also wake up to sounds.

Sleep is a way for northern bears to survive a long winter, making it difficult for a large animal to find enough food. In hibernation, the bear’s vital functions slow down and it fasts with the layer of fat it collects during the fall.

During hibernation, the bear’s body temperature drops a few degrees and the heart beats only 10 times a minute.

In their more southern habitats, bears do not sleep during the winter.
